Nutritional Medicine aims to uncover metabolic disturbances at the root of the clients main presenting complaints and the effects that nutrient sufficiency can have on these imbalances.
Once intake or exposure to unwanted food components or chemicals or allergens or bacteria, viruses, yeasts or parasites has been identified and corrected, then treatment begins.
To affect the greatest possible good for the client in regards to optimal health and nutrient status, a protocol that methodically works through correcting and supporting the following biological areas has developed -
| • | Digestive function |
| • | Diet and nutrient status |
| • | Essential Fatty Acid balance |
| • | Antioxidant capacity |
| • | Bowel dysbiosis correction (if needed) |
| • | Specific disease therapeutics (if needed) |
| • | Liver/Cellular detoxification optimisation |
| • | Hormone synthesis and balance |
| • | Neurotransmitter synthesis and balance |
This thorough systematic approach is used both in the asessment and the subsequent treatment. Following on from the discussions of client Jane Starbright in the assessment, the example below highlights the Nutrition Medicine appoach to Treatment. A more detailed version showing specific interventions is available upon request.
Example of Treatment protocols for Jane Starbright
Part of any Nutrition Medicine Treatment often involves very specific and individualised adjustment to diet. The following shows several diet options for client Jane Starbright based on her findings from the assessment.
Example of DIET for Jane Starbright
When a client has clearly demonstrated specific nutrient insufficiencies AND the client is unable to digest/absorb sufficient amounts of these nutrients from food due to their prevailing condition, then supplementation with very high quality individual nutrients that have zero allergen content is therapeutically implemented. In this way nutrient balance is restored efficiently and quickly with an often concurrent reduction in symptoms. Example of nutrients used in this way and the quality and specificity in which they are made is seen on the right .
Nutrition Medicine uses other interventions and life style choices to assist in decreasing inflammation and neurotransmitter and hormonal imbalances, dysbiosis, epigenetic influences and other metabolic disturbances.
Very interesting work is being done to elucidate the nature in inflammation and how it can be reduced by neuro-modulation through modalities like massage, acupuncture and energetic healing and techniques like meditation. The mechanism for this has been identified as the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway and the following paper discusses this in great detail. A great read.
Physiology and immunology of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, Keniv Tracey, J Clin Invest. Vol 117, 2007

Therapeutic Essential oils and other plant derived phytochemicals and their specific combinations and proportions need investigating and show some promise.
Mental and emotional states of the client are considered in all treatments and counselling and education forms an important part in holistic care.
A large part of the Nutrition Medicine practitioners work is the ongoing education of the client - particularly when it comes to FOOD and food preparation and the nutrient content of individual food items.
Once you have been assessed as to your current health status and nutrient repletion state, the power of food synergy comes into play. Once digestion, absorption and key nutrient insufficiences have been optimised and corrected then food intake can be adjusted to optimise health, wellbeing, longevity and performance. Knowledge of food content, preparation and the tools that can help extract the most bioavailable nutrients from your food, is communicated to all clients of Nutrition Medicine.
All clients receive individualised support material to help correct dietary imbalances. An example is this list of foods that show in deceasing order those foods highest in CALCIUM.

Thorne Research
Vitamins, Minerals, Enzymes and Betain HCL
For more than 25 years, Thorne has relentlessly pursued the highest possible quality and bioavailability in dietary supplements.
"At Thorne, we actually manufacture products that we sell – a key difference that allows us to control every aspect of the manufacturing process and ensure that every Thorne product is in pure, completely hypoallergenic form, and without the common additives, flowing agents, and binders used throughout the industry.
The key to comprehensive quality control is the use of an in-house laboratory. Having an in-house, state-of-the-art laboratory is absolutely necessary to manufacture superior dietary supplements.
Thorne Research's laboratory is a primary component to achieve our mission of maintaining strict control over every aspect of manufacture and quality and is an integral piece of our TGA certification. Our in-house laboratory allows for timely, accurate, cost-effective testing that ensures every product, from raw material to finished goods, meets all quality requirements.
Thorne Research's state-of-the art lab equipment includes: * Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer (ICP) * High Pressure Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC) with Series 200 Diode Array Detectors and Series 200 Fluorescence Detectors * Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) with Flame Fluorescence Detector and Electron Capture Detector * Near-Infrared Spectrophotometer * Microbiology lab * Peroxide analysis * U.S.P. dissolution
Every batch of every ingredient we receive is quarantined and tested for identity and purity before being allowed to be used in any Thorne Research product. Some of our products are tested again after the mixing phase of manufacturing to ensure a homogenous mix of ingredients has been obtained. Then, every finished product is tested again before being released for sale. Such stringent attention to quality control is extremely difficult to accomplish without a state-of-the-art, in-house laboratory."

Nordic Naturals
Fish Oils
Wild Fish & Pure Oceans Environmental Responsibility Nordic Naturals uses 100% wild Arctic Cod from the Arctic Ocean, between the Lofoten Islands outside of Bodø, Norway, and 100% wild anchovies and sardines from the Norwegian Sea and during their migration to the West Coast of South America.
The Arctic Ocean, Norwegian Sea, Southern Pacific Ocean, and waters above Eastern Antarctica are currently considered some of the purest oceans in the world, with virtually no overfishing taking place. Nordic Naturals is greatly concerned about overfishing, and receives updated information on fish stock in Norway and neighboring waters every week. Consequently Nordic Naturals only harvests fish in areas that have a plentiful supply, and that are not the subject of overfishing.
Not all Cod Liver Oils are Created Equal Few customers are aware of the fact that most cod liver oil (CLO) products are mostly made from fish other than cod, such as seit or haddock, as Arctic Cod is by far the most expensive raw material available.
Since only cod liver contains high levels of naturally occurring vitamins A and D, other cod liver oil manufacturers have to add back synthetic vitamins to standardize the fish oil as cod liver oil. Nordic Naturals uses 100% Arctic Cod for all of its cod liver oil products.
Our Arctic Cod Liver Oil contains the highest Omega-3 level of any CLO product, and is tested to ensure healthy levels of 100% naturally occurring vitamins A and D.

It is used for restlessness and sleeping disorders caused by nervous conditions. The therapeutic use of hops dates back to the ninth century and it has been used by North American Indians, Chinese and Indian populations as a treatment of insomnia and restlessness. The combination of valerian and hops is therefore a perfect combination for the treatment of sleeplessness and insomnia.

Cognitive disruption is related to alterations in the brain’s cholinergic system, oxidative stress and heavy metal toxicity all of which appear to be corrected, as various studies would suggest, with the use of KeenMind. KeenMind has demonstrated in clinical trials to improve cognitive processes like memory and speed of information processing.
