Health, Nutrition
and Medicine

The word health has its origins in the word Whole. Using the modern tools of medicine and the knowledge of nutrition and metabolism, nutrition medicine provides the perfect vehicle for achieving optimal health.

Your health status is directly related to how much your willing to learn (about your health), what you put into and don't put into your mouth, the interaction between your individual genetic makeup and the environment in which your body/psyche finds itself and the action you take.

The word you/your was used 8 times in the above sentence implying that you have the ability to significantly and positively influence optimal health status.

However correct action requires knowledge and understanding and if the destination is optimal health then what is needed first is finding out where one is at.

Assessment

The basis of Nutrition Medicine involves careful and thorough assessment of the client. Individual history is taken along with a genetic based family health history, a physical examination is performed, a dietary record is kept for about a week and then analysed utilizing the latest food nutrient values and finally pathology tests and other accessory examinations are used that help clarify the suspected metabolic picture of the client.

When a chronic illness is present the latest research findings and understandings about this condition are uncovered. Every attempt is made at identifying the underlying cause of any diagnosed medical conditions along with tracing the trigger that may have sparked onset of symptoms in addition to elucidating the mediating factors that may be perpetuating the disease process.

Treatment or Interventions

Following this workup, treatment can then begin by meticulously working through a template that takes into account existing acute and/or chronic illnesses along with important possible contributing causes of any metabolic and nutritional imbalances.

By working through this template we significantly increase the possibility of identifying and treating all possible contributing causes of the individuals imbalance.

Diet is carefully assessed through a diet diary/record and based on results of history and clinical picture, further tests or elimination diets may be needed that clarify any suspected allergies or food intolerance's. (i.e. milk allergy or salycilate or lactose intolerance).

Diet may need to be adjusted according to clients genetic predispositions or existing disease states or anthropometry or malnutrition state (i.e. ApoE genotype or celiac disease or obesity or sarcopenia).

Digestion is assessed and supported in those individuals who may be compromised due to illnesses (celiac), age, infections, tension and stress, personality type, surgery, emotional trauma, medication and inadequate knowledge of food or food preparation.

Many of these stifling influences on digestion are mediated though a decrease in stomach acid production, digestive pancreatic enzymes insufficiency and inadequate bile flow/production and impaired gut mucosa bought on by infection or immunological activation.

Anti-oxidant status, Essential fatty acid balance, gut dysbiosis, neurotransmitter function and hormone levels are all assessed in the individual and treated accordingly.

Monitoring and followups

Once the treatment has begun, monitoring of symptoms and health status comes into effect, and if needed life style or nutritional adjustments are made or further tests performed until optimal health is achieved.
